Colour of Music Festival Returns to Sacramento California November 15-18, 2022

Last year's COMF performance in Sacramento had three sold out performances!

The Colour of Music Festival announces its west coast return to Sacramento, California, November 15-18, 2022, presenting classical masterworks, chamber, vocal, piano, and organ performances and a literary presentation at various venues across Sacramento.

Since 2013, the Colour of Music Festival has brought classically trained Black musicians together to offer the public an opportunity to experience the talent of prodigiously gifted classical principals, composers, and performers of African descent share their musical talents, knowledge, and inspiration and showcase the impact and significance of Black classical composers and performers on American and world culture.

Presented by Visit Sacramento and the City of Sacramento, the Colour of Music Festival Petit will present four days of diverse classical discussions and performances.

Tuesday, November 15, 2 p.m. Matinée Panel Discussion sheds light on Charleston’s father of Black classical music, Edmond Thornton Jenkins, Morehouse College and Royal Conservatory of London alum and explores four of his compositions to be presented by the Colour of Music Festival Chamber Orchestra. Dr. Karen Chandler, Associate Professor Emerita, Arts Management Program, College of Charleston, Saturday Night Live’s keyboardist, Tuffus Zimbabwe, great nephew of Edmond Thornton Jenkins, and Dr. Christopher Brooks Professor of Anthropology at Virginia Commonwealth University and author of Roland Hayes: The Legacy of an American Tenor will provide historical context to the featured performance. Tuesday, November 15, 7:30 p.m. Chamber Music spotlights two unique quartets featuring Paris-based violinist Romuald Grimbert-Barré and a special presentation of Maxence Grimbert-Barré Cello Quartet with violinist Anyango Yarbo-Davenport in a debut performance. City of West Sacramento Galleria Hall, City of West Sacramento City Hall.

Wednesday, November 16, 2 p.m. Matinée Piano and Vocal Recital features two special guest artists―opera star Victor Ryan Robertson, tenor and Elizabeth G. Hill, pianist. Guild Theater, Oak Park.

Wednesday, November 16, 7:30 p.m. Colour of Music Festival Virtuosi String Chamber Orchestra under the leadership of violinist Anyango Yarbo-Davenport will perform a special presentation featuring strings and pipe organ. Spotlights include Méditation (from Thaïs Act II) by Jules Massenet, Adagio in G minor by Tomaso Albinoni, arranged by Remo Giazotto, violin, string orchestra and organ; special guest Mickey Terry Thomas, organist will join the ensemble with additional works including José White Lafitte’s La Bella Cubana and Pyotr IIyich Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence. City Church of Sacramento, Oak Park.

Thursday, November 17, 2 p.m. Matinée Literary Presentation explores the life and legacy of Fisk Jubilee alum, tenor Roland Hayes. Presented by Dr. Christopher Brooks, author of Roland Hayes: The Legacy of an American Tenor with special guest Victor Ryan Robertson, tenor. Guild Theater, Oak Park.

Thursday, November 17, 7:30 p.m. Colour of Music Festival Chamber Orchestra led by Maestro Julius P.Williams highlights Black composers’ contributions to classical music and the Festival’s home base of Charleston, South Carolina. Compositions include four of Edmond Thornton Jenkins’ works―Rhapsodic Overture, a California premiere, his original composition Charlestonia: A Folk Rhapsody, A Prayer, and his Clarinet Concerto with guest tenor, Victor Ryan Robertson. City Church of Sacramento, Oak Park.

Friday, November 18, 12 p.m. High Noon Organ Recital with organ virtuoso, historian, and Howard University Master Instructor Dr. Mickey Terry Thomas features a recital on pipe organ underscoring the significance of the organ on historically Black colleges, the first and for some, the only classical instrument afforded to black collegian in the HBCU experience. All Saints Episcopal Church, Sacramento.

Friday, November 18, 8:00 p.m. Festival Masterworks program features the Festival’s 80+ member orchestra with their colleague and violinist, Anyango Yarbo-Davenport, presenting Brahms Violin Concerto, Op. 77 and Florence Price’s The Oak, the first Black woman to have a composition performed by an American orchestra. Led by Berlin-based Maestro Brandon Keith Brown who returns to the U.S. podium after a five-year hiatus. Memorial Auditorium, downtown Sacramento.
